What I’ve Been Reading

I have a problem. I keep requesting more and more books from the library. And at any given time I have about eight checked out, and I keep forgetting which ones are due, and then I try to renew them online and find out that several of them have been requested by other patrons so I have to abandon the ones I’ve been reading and frantically try to finish the ones that are due the soonest.

This is why I’m partway through four different books right now.

Scott Pilgrim vol. 4: Sadly, this is the last volume that the Boston Public Library owns. I’m not exactly sure where to go next. Do I want to start buying the series? Should I try to find a kind soul who will loan them to me? Quandary.

The Burn Journals: I heard a couple of sections from this on This American Life (another enabler for my book addiction) and had to read it. It ended up being a bit of a tough read–turns out when you’ve struggled with depression in your adolescence, it can be hard to read about other people’s suicidal teen years–but I’d still recommend it.

Fostering Digital Information Literacy

This past weekend I had the pleasure and the privilege of presenting at Sex::Tech 2009, a conference focusing on youth, technology and sexual health. I presented (a little nervously, I might add) highlights from the work young adult librarians are doing to support teen sexual health, as well as some of the barriers we face to providing comprehensive sexual health information in our libraries.

The conference was amazing–full of teens and teen advocates–and I absolutely recommend that anyone interested in health & wellness, youth advocacy, technology or sex education try to attend next year. You can check out the slides and some of the cool people I met over in the YALSA post. Full text for my presentation is after the jump. (more…)

Welcome to the new site!

I know it’s a little weird to do a “Hello, world” after I’ve already published 52 posts, but those were all originally published on my personal blog. I decided to create this, my professional blog, as a home for all my book reviews, gaming info, and general musings on young adults and libraries. Welcome!

Something odd happened to all my tags when I moved the posts over from another WordPress blog, though, so for now author tags are a little wonky. My apologies, but the fix isn’t a huge priority at the moment. I hope to get them all re-written… um… sometime.

In the meantime, check out my most recent YALSA post, which was featured in the most recent edition of YAttitudes and ALA Direct!
